Dear Colleague,

Hello, this is Sang-Jin Shin, the 29th president of KSES.

It is an infinite honor to be inaugurated as the 29th president of KSES, which I love the most and work with passion. Personally, KSES is my other family. It has been with me for 25 years since I joined in 1998, the year that I finished my residency program. Once again, I would like to thank the respectful chief counsels, directors, and members who have entrusted me with the heavy responsibility of being the president of KSES, which is like my alter ego, for a year.

Korean Shoulder and Elbow Society was founded in 1993 by 15 councilors and marks its 30th anniversary this year. KSES has grown steadily and so far in 2022, there are 1556 general members and 121 active regular members. KSES have achieved remarkable progress throughout the years. Furthermore, with the efforts of former presidents and many other members, KSES created a corporation for the first time as a sub-association of the Korean Orthopedic Association. With our distinctiveness, KSES created a new turning point for the management of the society. In academic terms, KSES successfully organized Academic Congress of the Asian Shoulder Association (ACASA) in 2002 and International Congress on Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES) in 2016. KSES got promoted and hosted as an international conference since 2021. Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow (CiSE), the official journal of our society is registered in PubMed. KSES took the first step toward establishing the status of CiSE as an international journal. Currently, KSES is cooperating and doing fellowship with the Japan Shoulder Society and the European Shoulder Society. Besides this, starting from the current year, fellows of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society will visit Korea, which enables to promote the high knowledge and techniques of Korean doctors. Now, it has become a commonly acknowledged fact that KSES has the highest status not only in Korea but also throughout the world. The current international status of KSES is the result of the hard work of all members.

Age 30 of a person is called ‘lee lip’ in Korea. It means at the age of 30, the heart stands firmly on morality, and also the foundation of learning is established. It is time for KSES to ensure internal stability while achieving academic and quantitative growth. KSES needs time to look back on the past, which was spent breathlessly to achieve goals. KSES needs to take time to organize the surroundings and oneself to take a bigger step. It is necessary to create academic systems such as organizing bylaws of KSES corporation, providing various medical information and opportunities for regular members, and establishing roles of many committees. Through these systems, any executives or members can understand, use, and work for the society. These tasks are important and will be a valuable time for the next 30 years of KSES.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of KSES, we are planning an academic closed meeting for active regular members who love and devote themselves to KSES. We are preparing opportunities to promote friendship as we provide space and programs for academic discussions of free themes, without time restrictions. Moreover, the 30th anniversary symposium in 2023 plans to invite many worldwide famous shoulder surgeons. It is the first international symposium and 30th anniversary event since international exchanges have been severed due to the unprecedented outbreak that has swept the world. We will do our best to invite as many domestic members and foreign scholars and be a society which enables active exchanges. We are also planning a booklet that organizes the footsteps of 30 years to commemorate the 30th anniversary of KSES.

I will try my best to make the year 2022 a foundation for the next 30, even 100 years for KSES. Also, I will do my utmost to make the society where members can always participate in the symposium with pleasure and can develop all together.

Please give us a lot of attention, active participation, and advices.
